Stream Improvement Made - 2004
Winter came early and often to central Pennsylvania this year, with major snowstorms beginning in Decmeber. By late February, more than 60 inches of snow had been deposited on the region. The rigorous weather slowed the progress on some of our stream-improvement project, but the members of our Grounds & Maintenance crew managed to make some headway in spite of Old Man Winter.
Work on stabilizing the corner of an existing dam on the upper end of the Blind Dog stretch of Spruce Creek was completed in mid-January, although this project took more time and work than was first expected. A series of V-dams are also scheduled to be installed on this beat. Work on these devices should be completed in early spring.
Most of the necessary fill material is in place to complete the elevated flood plain on the Upper Colerain beat. Wet weather throughout the fall delayed transporting the material to the streamside until after the ground froze. As soon as the snow melts, final landscaping can proceed in order to shape the stream bank into its final conformation.
High water throughout the fall prevented any progress on an extensive series of in-stream devices on the Upper Franklinville beat. Rather disrupt the fishing on this popular and productive fishing site this spring, work on this project will likely now be pushed back until early summer.
